#1 Gods of The Nowhere: A Novel of Halloween by James Tipper
Nothing comes cloese to capturing the atmosphere and gravitasse of this ancient and mysterious holiday like this imaginative novel does. From druids, to witches, to skeletons to vampires, GOTN is an epic journey into the land where it all came from. A feast for Halloween lovers.

#2 The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
A good ol’ fashioned haunted house book that still holds up today. It is the template for all that came after it.

#3 The Shining by Stephen King
Though it is set in winter, and not autumn, King still crafts a haunted house book that will leave you breathless.

#4 Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
A textbook gothic novel Atmosphere galore. Though this is not a horror novel per se, it is a psychological ride through an old victorian mansion haunted by the memory of its former mistress. Great writing style.

#5 The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
Old fashioned and rich with atmosphere. Gaiman turns a graveyard into a community of souls. An interesting idea and a breezy read.

#6 It by Stephen King
Evil clowns. Need I say more.

#7 I Am Legend by Richard Matheson
Way beetter than the movie. Matheson’s post-apocalyptic tale of a world where vampires rule the night is one of the best vampire stories ever. Even better, there are no brooding teenagers.

#8 Interview With The Vampire by Anne Rice
Gothic and haunting. New Orleans is the backdrop for this innovative vampire tale where the undead are comflicted as to what they have become.

#9 Blackwood Farn by Anne Rice
Another Anne Rice, and an unconventional choice, but this book is atmospheric to the core. An old antebellum mansion in the swamps of New Orleans is the best charachter.

#10 The Discarded Ones by James Tipper
Another unconventional choice, but I figure you all know about Dracula and Frankenstein. Just like with my #1 pick, Tipper has a way of creating mood that sticks to you. This tale of kids trapped in a cultish boarding school may not seem like a horror book for Halloween, but after you read it, tell me if you are not disturbed?
