Great Halloween Finger Foods for Children and Adults!

Halloween began with the ancient Gaelic Festival called Samhain. It was originally celebrated at the end of harvest and many cultures celebrated this event. It began as a very important celebration because most people depended upon the harvest for the winter months’ survival. There are a variety of customs, foods, symbols, and traditions used to celebrate Halloween around the world, but there are several similarities for the celebration.

Caterpillar Sandwich
Long Loaf of Italian Bread
1/4 cup Mayonnaise
2 teaspoons Dry Mustard

1/4 teaspoon Onion Powder
2 teaspoons Parsley
Celery Stalks-Thinly Sliced
Olive Slices with Pimento 
In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, dry mustard, parsley, and onion powder. Stir well and set aside. Then, cut 1 loaf Italian bread into 10 slices without cutting all the way through the loaf. Spread mayonnaise mixture between every other slice. Next, fold luncheon meat in half and tuck a slice of cheese in between. Insert folded meat and cheese into every other slot that has the mayonnaise mixture in it. Wrap the loaf in aluminum foil. Preheat conventional oven to 375 degrees. Place the loaf in the oven for about 25 minutes. Remove and allow it to cool. Use thin sliced celery stalks for antenna. Use olive slices with pimento in center on toothpicks for caterpillar eyes. To serve, cut through the loaf in sliced cuts that you did not fill with lunchmeat and cheese.

Dead Grasshopper
1-6 ounce package Butterscotch Chips
1 cup Salted Peanuts
3 cups Chow Mien Noodles
In a medium saucepan, melt 1the butterscotch chips over low heat. Remember, to stirring constantly in order to avoid burning. Remove pan and stir in peanuts and chow mien noodles. Form the mixture into teaspoon size balls and place on a lined tray with waxed paper place teaspoons.

Dirt
Oreo Cookies-Crumbled
Chocolate Pudding
Gummy Worms
Put chocolate pudding in clear plastic containers and imbed a gummy worm or two. Cover the top of the pudding with crushed chocolate cookie crumbs. It looks good if a worm is peeking out of the dirt.

Ghoulish Dip 
Sour cream based Dip

Green Food Coloring
1/4 of a Red Bell Pepper-Chopped
1/4 of a Yellow Bell Pepper-Chopped
First, add a few drops of green food coloring to the dip and mix well. Then, place small bits of the red and yellow bell pepper across the top of the dip. Serve with Chips, Crackers, and/or Vegetables.

Spiders
Prunes
Licorice Slivers or Stick Pretzels
Red Candies
Use a prune for the body, the licorice slivers or stick pretzels for the legs, and two red candies for the eyes of a spider.
