Halloween may seem scary to young children, but it doesn’t have to be. Although you normally hear about horror or scary movies at Halloween, there are some great Halloween themed children’s movies that your toddlers and preschoolers will love. Most big-screen Halloween movies, even ones for children or families, are not appropriate for children this young. However, there are a lot of Halloween DVDs available that are fantastic. Many of them star characters that your children already know and love.
Here are some of the best DVDs available for one through four year olds about Halloween.
Dora’s Halloween Adventure
Millions of children around the world already adore Dora the Explorer. If your child is one of them, then they will love Dora’s Halloween DVD. Rather than one long movie, the DVD actually has separate Halloween episodes. This can make it great if you want to limit how long they’re watching the TV for, or incorporate it into other Halloween activities. As always, it is educational and is dual English-Spanish.
This October a new Go Diego Go Halloween DVD is being released as well. (Diego is Dora’s cousin and, as well as appearing on her show, has his own series.) This is sure to be a hit with kids who like the shows Dora the Explorer and Go Diego Go.
It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
The average toddler or preschooler nowadays has no idea who Charlie Brown is. But this classic Halloween movie (it first came out in 1966) will remind parents of their own childhoods, and it is still a good Halloween movie (and not too scary for little ones). As you would expect from Charlie Brown, it is sweet and not at all scary, and appropriate for even very young children.
Wallace & Gromit The Curse of the Wererabbit
The cute and funny claymation characters Wallace and Gromit are back in this movie about a wererabbit that is terrorizing gardeners. This is a good one to watch together as a family, as there are jokes and entertainment for children of all ages and their parents. Younger toddlers might not want to stick through the whole movie, but preschoolers will be able to follow the storyline.
Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween Movie
Winnie the Pooh is one of the most beloved of all children’s characters. This sweet Halloween movie is appealing to toddlers and preschoolers, and will introduce them to Halloween using familiar characters and a typically 100 acre wood child-friendly story line.
Tinkerbell and the Lost Treasure
This movie is about autumn really and not Halloween, but it is released on DVD just before Halloween this year (in the US-international release dates may vary slightly). But it is still a great Halloween opportunity. Let your child dress up like a character from Neverland and watch Tinkerbell with their own fairy wings (or other costume). Thanks to the Tinkerbell movie, toddlers and preschoolers love this fairy again, and with a great quest storyline, this movie should be a great watch this Halloween.
Unless you are absolutely sure that it will be appropriate for your child, it’s always a good idea to preview the movie first or watch it with your child so that you can fast-forward or stop it if it gets to scary, explain things to them, and just so that you can have fun as a family.
