With Halloween being the fastest growing holiday, haunted houses attract nearly 12,000,000 visitors annually across the U.S. The smaller towns around Springfield, Illinois are full of fall festivals, parades, and haunted houses. An original to this area is The State House Inn’s Horrific Happenings weekend event. The State House Inn is a hotel located in Downtown Springfield and Horrific Happenings is an annual event, typically the weekend before Halloween. It is an all inclusive type of package that includes your overnight hotel stay, your meals (dinner, dessert, and breakfast the following morning), it also includes charter bus transportation to and from local haunted attractions, it includes your admission into those attractions or haunted houses. The hotel also holds a costume party when guests return to the hotel. This is the only event of this type found in the area.
Auburn Illinois is located approximately 18 miles South of Springfield. Auburn houses two great haunted attractions. Both The Auburn Haunted House and The Auburn Haunted Theatre are top rated “haunts” on many haunted house rating sites. The Auburn Haunted House has been in operation for over 10 years and is considered a charity event, as a majority of the proceeds go to the Ark & Anchor Lodge #354 providing several scholarships to children. Located in an old theatre building, The Auburn Haunted Theatre is located one block from The Auburn Haunted House. Both haunts offer concessions, bonfires, and other forms of outside entertainment.
Located back in Springfield, the Carter Brothers Haunted Hayrides is located at Carter Stables. This is an annual event that is visited by many locals and out-of-towners alike. This could be considered more of a family event, unlike the Halloween package and haunted houses above. The wait can sometime be long, but they offer a huge bonfire and concessions to keep you warm during your wait. They will take a group of about ten people in a large hay filled trailer and pull you through the hills of the river valley that surrounds the property.
Just past Rochester, in Barry, Illinois you can find Boo Crew Haunted House. Rochester is located about 12 miles outside of Springfield. Located in a very large township facility building, Boo Crew is a huge haunted house compared to many. They feature many high-tech props and the sets are very elaborate. Like the other haunted houses, Boo Crew also offers concessions to enjoy during your wait. Something different that they offer is different levels of scary. You are able to choose from a traditional, Halloween light, or guided tour.
Many of these haunted houses open the first week in October through Halloween. All of them offer amazing costumes, great props, and a terrifying fun-filled time!
