Dip Recipes For Christmas Entertaining

Christmas entertaining need not be overwhelming or time-consuming. Careful preparation and planning can ensure that your time with family and friends is not spent in the kitchen. These dip recipes can be made in advance and kept in the fridge. They are also great to combine with any left-overs the following day. Children will enjoy dunking bread or vegetables into these dips.

Cucumber, Mint and Yogurt Dip

You will need:

  • 1 cucumber
  • 20 mint leaves
  • Large carton of Greek yogurt
  • Half a teaspoon of salt

To make:


  1. Peel and finely chop the cucumber, removing as many seeds as possible.
  2. Finely chop the mint leaves
  3. Thoroughly mix the cucumber together with the mint leaves
  4. Add the yogurt and salt and ensure well combined.

Lovely served with a selection of chopped vegetables, such as carrot, celery, peppers and some Vegetarian Quiche

Cheesy Garlic Dip

You will need:

  • 4 ounces of low fat soft cheese (Philadelphia is great)
  • 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise
  • 1 crushed clove of garlic
  • Salt and pepper
  • 2 tablespoons of chopped chives

To make:

  1. Thoroughly mix the low fat cheese, mayonnaise, and crushed garlic together
  2. Add salt and pepper as desired.
  3. Serve with the chopped chives sprinkled on top.
  4. Thoroughly chill before serving – at least an hour in the fridge.

Lovely as an accompaniment to homemade bread which has been toasted and cut into chunks.

Spicy Hot Dip

You will need:

  • 1 ounce of butter
  • 3 tablespoons of plain flour
  • Half a pint of chicken stock
  • 1 teaspoon of curry powder
  • 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
  • 2 tablespoons of vinegar
  • Quarter of a pint of cream

To make:

  1. Gently melt the butter in a large saucepan
  2. Slowly add the flour and cook over a gently heat for a few minutes.
  3. Stir in the curry powder
  4. Stir in the stock a little at a time until thick.
  5. Add the vinegar and cayenne
  6. Allow to cool before adding the cream.

This spicy dip works really well with a selection of Indian naan breads, onion bhajis, poppadoms and samosas. Served with a curry, such as a Cashew Nut Curry, you will be able to warm up your evening!

Cheesy Blue Dip

You will need:

  • 4 ounces of blue cheese of your choice (Danish blue is nice)
  • 4 ounces of cream cheese (Philadelphia is great)
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper

To make:

  1. Add all of the ingredients to a food processor and blend together thoroughly.
  2. Season as desired.

This blue cheese dip is great with sticks of crunchy vegetables and a pizza made with homemade pizza dough.
