Many people are anxious at the approaching holidays such as Easter because it’s so easy to get caught in the celebrations and to eat too much reputedly fattening, and unhealthy chocolate.

But it doesn’t have to be so; research shows that dark chocolate is full of health-enhancing antioxidants, minerals, and mood enhancing chemicals. Because the kind of fat found in dark chocolate is stearic acid, it slows the digestion down and keeps you feeling full longer, so you don’t overeat. It can also help in dieting because it makes you feel good so you may forget about eating more other, less healthy food.

Dark Chocolate Can Control Appetite and Aid Weight Loss

University of Copenhagen researchers found that eating dark chocolate can help regulate appetite. They theorize that it may be due to the bitter taste of dark chocolate. Dark chocolate has more cocoa butter, most of which is stearic acid that is known to slow down digestion, says the online Health Magazine.

The Flat Belly Diet of Prevention magazine says monounsaturated fatty acids or MUFAs, the kind of fat found in dark chocolate actually keeps your belly flat. It recommends including dark chocolate in your everyday diet in controlled amounts.

Why dark chocolate? Research suggests milk interferes with the absorption of the antioxidants found in cocoa. Also the dark color indicates dark chocolate has more of the healthy antioxidants in it.

Dark Chocolate Has Many Vitamins, Minerals, and Feel-Good Chemicals

Recent scientific research confirm what chocolate lovers all over know for a fact: eating chocolate makes one feel good.

Jim Spadaccini explains in the online Exploratium Magazine of San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts Museum that chocolate contains more than 300 known chemicals, and names three that in combination create the pleasurable feeling after eating chocolate: theobromine, phenylethylamine, and caffeine. He also reports that Andrew Waterhouse, the lead researcher from U.C. Davis, says chocolate contains high concentrations of the antioxidant phenolics that may help lower the risk of heart disease. Look Great, Lose Weight, Save Money online magazine says chocolate and cocoa powder are the highest known natural source of magnesium, and that chocolate has more antioxidants than red wine.

Many researchers agree that feeling “good” or stress free, as one often feels after eating chocolate, can help people keep to their weight loss plan.

Eating Dark Chocolate Easter Eggs or Bunnies is Good For You

While majority of Easter eggs are made of milk chocolate, there are many dark chocolate eggs on the market. The original Easter eggs actually started in Germany and France in the 19th century, and they were made of bitter dark chocolate. The tradition continues. Household names such as Cadbury or Hershey make dark chocolate eggs, or you can try the gourmet varieties such as Perugina, Godiva, or Hotel Chocolat.

European chocolates usually have more cocoa butter, and this is why they are more diet-friendly and contain more healthy antioxidants – not to mention those mood-lifting chemicals like theobromine.

Belgian and Swiss chocolates are famed and their taste and quality are related to the large amount of cocoa butter in their products. You can try online shopping to find the best deals, using such well-known tools as Yahoo or Google shopping. Many manufacturers guarantee an Easter delivery even if the order comes in at the last minute.
