Classics that Are Way Better Than Just Candy

Everyone always expects the usual candy during Halloween, but I think it’s better when you get a little more creative. Maybe they’re not injected with high fructose corn syrup, but at least these snacks have some personality...

Popcorn balls are the weirdly ubiquitous snack that is both old-school, yet still lovable. What you need to make one of my favourite treats:
1 cup honey
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Combine ingredients except for vanilla extract in a saucepan over low heat until the mixture starts to boil. Cook it until it reaches a “hard stage.” (If a drop of the mixture becomes hard when dropped in cool water, you’ve got it.) Remove from heat and mix in vanilla extract, then carefully pour the mixture over 3 quarts popcorn. Then you just press them into balls (make sure to grease your hands slightly so you don’t get super sticky…). You should come out with 8-10 popcorn balls.

Another really quick, fun Halloween trick is to simply get Royal Icing (a great recipe here, at cooks.com), which hardens really quickly. Buy black icing and form spider shapes (on wax paper, for no-stick) and — voila — you have little spider treats.

These are just two quick and easy recipes that leave you looking just a little bit more ambitious with only a little bit of work.
