Ten Things I Love About Halloween and the Fall Season

  1. Fall means it’s time for new and returning television series. It’s always entertaining trying to figure out which shows will survive and which shows have no chance in hell. Surprisingly, this year there seems to be some good choices.
  2. When the weather starts to change the first thing that comes to mind is football. Being a former Wolverine, I’m a huge college football fan and I love bundling up to go to the Big House and watch a game or just curling up in front of the fireplace to watch a showdown. In addition to the football October also means that hockey and basketball are beginning and the baseball season is ending. It’s a sports lover’s dream come true!
  3. Heat and I don’t mix well so although I enjoy Summer, I struggle through it every year. Fall is my favorite season because the weather is perfect. I like a little rain and I like being able to throw on a sweatshirt and be comfortable. This is the perfect time of year for a bike ride, rollerblading or a nice long walk. The Fall scenery can be amazing and can be very inspirational, particularly for a writer. Who wouldn’t be inspired by those colors?
  4. The most important event of the Fall season is, of course, Halloween. For me, this means costume shopping and parties. Every year some friends and I try to coordinate our costumes and find a different party to go to. Last year we went as a Superhero fighting trio and had an amazing time.
  5. With Halloween also comes haunted houses. I am a huge horror fan so always try to hit up a bunch each year. I am also in the Jaycees who hold a haunted house hop each year. As Halloween has become more and more of a adult-oriented holiday, the houses have gotten more and more extravagant and have risen in number. It’s always exciting to pickup the local haunted guide the Fear Finder and see which houses are making a return and which ones are brand new.
  6. Many of the local haunted houses feature haunted hayrides as well. One of the best parts of these rides is free apple cider and donuts at the end. The Michigan area has a number of great cider mills and I take full advantage of this fact. I also have a sweet spot for candy apples.
  7. Being a big horror fan means I’m obsessed with horror movies and music. As Halloween approaches, I always find myself in the middle of a movie marathon usually beginning with my faves The Shining and Nightmare on Elm Street and ending with, naturally, Halloween. The Fall season also means my Halloween cds come out of the closet and find a home in my disc player.
  8. The ultimate local haunted Fall destination is Cedar Point where they play host to Halloweekends. Every weekend in September and October you can visit and ride the rides (including their 14 roller coasters) and go through their numerous haunted houses and fright areas. Being an excitement junkie and horror aficionado makes this my Fall mecca.
  9. Halloween in Detroit always means I will be downtown at the Fillmore Theater for Insane Clown Posse’s Halloween concert Hallowicked. Local and national bands, costumes, fellow Juggalos and lots of Faygo always makes for a crazy night.
  10. Pumpkin Pie. I know; you wouldn’t think that would be my favorite thing about Fall but it’s the first thing that always comes to mind. I love to eat and pumpkin pie with lots of whipped cream is my heaven. There’s just something about the taste that is addictive.
