Beware When Things Start to Go Bump in the Night
With Halloween approaching I’ve been thinking about my favorite ghost stories, and movies that stand up against the passing of time…Movies that chill and thrill you while you anxiously await the next scene..
One such movie that comes to my mind is a film by Steven Spielberg ….one he directed along with another well known director noted for his movies that go bump in the night, Tobe Hooper..
Yes, I’m talking about that classic tale of The Poltergeist..Starring Jobeth Williams and Craig T. Nelson as the harried parents whose life is turned upside down, literally!
This film took the spooky haunted house out of the “high on a deserted hilltop” shadowy existence it had been shown in so long and landed that house right smack dab in the middle of the suburbs.
It started out innocently enough when we meet the happy typical family who has just moved into a new house…..All of a sudden some strange things start to occur when playful poltergeists begin to play tricks on these unsuspecting folks…little things at first, but they soon escalate into terrifying moments for the family and for us in the viewing audience.
It doesn’t take long before the house erupts into terrifying occurrences , taking the family’s youngest child with them into their realm.
A team of paranormal ghost hunters are brought in to try to make sense of what’s going on to no avail….at least at first.
The special effects are amazing in this film… Starting with the tree that explodes into the children’s room in an attempt to kidnap the young boy and when the poltergeists arrive to take the little girl and she mysteriously disappears into the house itself… then, when the most horrifying entity of them all appears all hell breaks lose.
When the reasons are revealed behind these ghostly terrors we learn the truth about respecting the dead….It seems that the problem is this house is built on Indian burial grounds and the places they are put to rest
Better not mess around with ancient Indian burial grounds…. They won’t like it!
The Poltergeist was released in 1982 and stilll stands up to time as a Classic Ghost Story
